The Proposal...

Wednesday, April 30, 2014

We'd been dating for three years already, and Paul never hinted marriage, not one bit, despite the fact that he had moved to Houston to be closer to me and even purchased a home.  So when I panicked at times, friends who knew us well would remind me that Paul and I lived at very different speeds: Me at lightning speed and Paul calm as summer breeze.

But little did I know, he'd be planning my proposal for quite some time - 2011 to be exact and had even driven to the Valley (deep South Texas) to ask my parents for my hand in marriage in his broken Spanish!  He showed me an e-mail he sent to himself back then with ideas on how he envisioned the day to pan out.

That Saturday, August 24, when he suggested we head to Galveston for the day, I just thought he was being the fun, spontaneous boyfriend he always is and wanted to help me relax before the start of the academic year which at my previous job meant the craziest, busiest time of the year.

My handsome fiancĂ©
We indulged in delicious seafood, soaked in the warm sun as we strolled across the beach, took a dip in the pool and even sipped on some fresh cocktails as we relaxed on rocking chairs overlooking the ocean.

When the sun set, Paul took me back to the beach for nice walk along the water. I started blabbering about work as we walked when he interrupted me to point at a small bottle that had come rolling to his feet.  He picked it up, started pulling on a piece of paper inside of it and then passed it on to me. I panicked thinking there may be some sea creature inside the bottle (of course, only I have thoughts like that). but instead found the piece of rolled up paper with the words "Will You Marry Me?" on it and when I turned around, Paul was down on one knee.

Tears were inevitable

I hugged him and cried before I even looked at the ring.  When I finally did, I cried even MORE as it was the most beautiful ring I had ever seen!
